Episode 7, Season 4 | November 20, 2023
Being an adolescent girl can be hard — add learning challenges and giftedness — and everything seems to be amplified. In this podcast episode, we welcome guest, Dr. Lisa White, Psychologist at The Summit Center, who works with twice-exceptional girls, as we discuss how these remarkable individuals perceive themselves and navigate school and life. You’ll gain valuable insights about twice-exceptional girls and hear some strategies for nurturing their strengths and addressing their specific needs. Dr. Lisa sheds light on the unique experiences of twice-exceptional (2e) girls with practical tips for parents looking for ways to provide support to them.
Dr. Lisa White has been with Summit Center since its inception in 2009, and has worked with gifted and twice-exceptional children for almost 20 years. She provides strengths-based, comprehensive psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations for children and adolescents. In addition, Dr. White provides coaching and consultation, both to guide parents in raising their 2e children and to help families find the best educational environment for their kids, such as deciding whether a public, private, or alternative school option might be the best fit.
Dr. White has special interests in the particular needs of gifted/2e girls and how 2e teens date and have relationships, and has given talks to local parent groups and schools. She also speaks to teachers about identifying and educating gifted and twice-exceptional students in the classroom. Other clinical interests include the social and emotional development of gifted and twice-exceptional children and children with learning disabilities and ADHD. For seven summers, Dr. White worked at Camp Summit, an overnight camp for gifted and 2e kids. Dr. White earned her Ph.D. at the California School of Professional Psychology, where her doctoral dissertation research explored parent-child interactions in families with gifted children. Dr. White is also experienced in working with families with twins and higher-order multiples, and for 13 years she led a support group for expectant and new parents of twins. She is also the parent of young-adult gifted/2e twins.
